If you enjoy the woods and a little competition, orienteering may be your sport. Combining navigation, endurance and quick decision-making, participants use a detailed map and compass to locate a series of checkpoints, racing against the clock to complete the course. Because competitors often disappear deep into the landscape, orienteering remains less visible than many outdoor sports, but the North Texas Orienteering Association (NTOA) is working to change that. Among the natural areas surrounding Joe Pool Lake, the northwest corner of Estes Park is especially well suited for an orienteering course, with towering old-growth trees, dense vines that offer clever locations for checkpoints and convenient access for participants. NTOA will provide expert guidance in designing a first-rate course that welcomes both beginners and experienced competitors. Dust off your compass and lace up your trail shoes!
